Knowing Amber, they’re both the easy way as well…
Last week, Firaxis and 2K gamers have announced that the new game in the Civilization series, Civilization 5 , will be released at the fall of 2010. As always, bits of information are starting to spread over the web regarding the features and tweaks of the new version. Among the most noticeable changes are the hexagon tiles, ranged attack by archers and catapults, and the ability to hold a battle line (totally changing the ways wars are fought in the game). There are also rumors that religion will play a less significant part, and that leaders will have a preferred strategy for winning the game. But these are only high level statements, we’ll have to wait until more info is release to see the whole picture.

I’m a big fan of the series, played every version of the game since Civilization 1. In terms of graphics and soundtracks, the series has evolved greatly over the last twenty years. But the real key of Civilization’s success has always been its ability to make an accurate abstraction of the real life powers that drive humankind throughout history. Science, economy, negotiations, wars, trade, keeping your people happy – these are all concepts which appear in many of today’s strategy games. But Civilization was the first to introduce them, and up to this day, it utilizes them in the most simple, understandable, yet versatile way.
One last note. The release of a new Civilization game is always a great reason to depart, if only for a while, from your friends and family, close yourself in a dark room (preferably with some food, drink, and a toilet) and start playing for hours and hours. So if this site suddenly stops updating for a few weeks, you’ll have to forgive me. I’m probably busy conquering the world.
